The Autobiography of a Papillon by Lark, Konrad is a book that tells the story of its author's life as a prisoner in Burma during World War II. It details how he survived his incarceration by befriending other prisoners and crafting elaborate escape plans. The book is made up of a journal that was written in captivity by Lark. His last entry in the journal was dated 12 February 1943. The story is also a fictionalised account of his escape from jail through the use of supposed friends to free him. The book won the 1962 Korzeniowski Prize for Literature, and has been translated into several languages, including Russian, French and Spanish. The action takes place during World War II when the Burmese army controlled most of Burma, but still needed German support because they were fighting against the Japanese in their Indochinese colony of French Indochina. Lark's Burmese captors, nicknamed Papillons because of their red butterfly tattoos, were from a group of collaborators who worked with the Japanese. Lark died in 1992, and Konrad Korzeniowski was his pen name. Lark is therefore a pseudonym. In 2002, "Businessweek" called the book one of the 100 best business books ever written. "Sonam's room/Moka's room/Papillon" is a collection of poems in English by noted Indian poet Sunil Gangopadhyay. It won the 1998 Best Poetry Book in English from Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy for Poetry. cfa1e77820
